Local Anesthetic Administration for Dental Hygienists in North Carolina

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Hygienists practicing in the state of North Carolina for a minimum of two years who wish to apply for certification to administer local anesthetics through the North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners.

COURSE DATES:

Didactic portions of course will be completed at your own pace prior to clinical day.

When you request to register, you will request dates to schedule your 8 hr clinical day. Private classes, weekdays, and weekends are available.

TUITION: $2000

Tuition is due on the clinical day.  Once your request to register for the course has been processed, you will be emailed a payment link. A refund of 80% will be provided with a minimum of 48-hour cancellation notice prior to your scheduled clinical day.

All courses are taught in-person with hands-on training at our beautiful waterfront location!

For larger groups or schools, we can come to your business or office space.

Prerequisites

  1. Current NC Dental Hygiene License-must have been practicing for 2 years

  2. Current CPR/BLS card (our school can certify and re-certify BLS)

  3. OSHA and HIPAA training certificates

  4. Hep B vaccination verification (titers acceptable)

  5. Affidavit

Course Description:

This course of study on local anesthetics will include the following:​

  • 16 didactic hours on pharmacology, physiology, equipment, block and infiltration techniques, legal issues, and medical emergencies.

  • 8 clinical hours of instruction and experience in administering local anesthesia injections along with medical emergency training.

  • Completion of at least 12 block and 12 infiltration injections under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist who must certify the applicant’s competency.

  1. Medical assessment of the patient

  2. Management of pain and anxiety

  3. Head and neck anatomy

  4. Physiology

  5. Pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors

  6. Instrumentation used and infection control

  7. Techniques of local anesthesia

  8. Prevention, recognition, and management of medical emergencies

  9. Complications and legal considerations

Outcome:

As per NC Senate Bill 146, Dental hygienists will be able to submit the documentation detailing the satisfaction of each of these requirements to the NCDBE to request certification to administer local anesthetics.
